Greed, Need or Disenchant? (Oops, sorry, I pressed the wrong button)

Looting protocol is, sadly, the most neglected rule of the game of WoW.
Nothing will spoil an otherwise excellent run through an instance more than a player displaying their ignorance by rolling need on an item unsuitable for their class.

Looting rules seem to vary between guilds and, as shown recently by the new dungeon finder system, across realms.

It is NOT rocket science. Lets firstly examine the NEED roll

Step 1: NEVER roll need on an item unless it is bind on pickup.
Step 2: Only roll need on an item you can currently equip as an upgrade.
Step 3: Do NOT roll need on an item that would be an upgrade for your other spec. If you wish to upgrade your healing set, enter the instance as a healer, not as a tank.

In the event that another party member has won a roll on an item you desire, negotiate with them the purchase of that item. More often than not they will just give it to you.

If an item drops that would be an upgrade for you but the item is bind on equip simply ask before rolling if you may roll need and wait for an answer before rolling. It may help to link your currently equipped item to party chat to indicate your need. BUT, the fairest way to approach this situation is to just roll greed and if you don’t win the roll, approach the player who did and negotiate a trade.

Remember that you are displaying "Knights of Ni" under your name and that your behaviour in “pick up groups” not only defines you as a player but also reflects on the guild.

  1. Thanks for this, I actually thought you could NEED items that were BoE as long as you can use it for your class and spec.

  2. Excellent statement, Nanodot! As an experienced player i knew most of what you said, but to have it repeated out in the open is something else. I would go as far as to make the article an "unwritten" Rule of Conduct.

  3. Actually, Gouki, uou can roll NEED on BoE items.. It is just not "nice" to do so. One of the problems with the cross realm looting options is that NEED rolls are not allowed where they should be. Example: A leather wearing healer can not roll NEED on a cloth healer's item. This is a major problem when a party member has rolled disenchant and a tradable item becomes broken into shards or dust. Because of this I believe it is VERY important to discuss in group the members needs before ANY roll is made by anyone.

  4. I personally have not come across the issues you mention above as yet - it has always been looted correctly.
I will mention that I have watched what has rolled before I have chosen and asked if all others have selected greed.

That being said - if you do lose a roll do not just port out of the instance and leave the others standing, it may come back to haunt you...

  5. Hey Wedges, I think the issue of not being able to roll need on cloth if you are a leather wearer is due to the "need before greed" default loot option set up with cross domain groups.

I have seen the issue arrise, and the loosing player did exactly as you suggested avoiding: He abused the winner for rolling disenchant and ported out of the instance.

As for looting discussion in these PUG situations... I've found it unappreciated. Suggestions to ensure fair loot distribution have attracted such sophisticated responses as "Chill", "Fail" and my alltime favorite "Gay".

I've been left with the impression that the intellect of some puggers is proportional to the extent of their vocabulary. :(

  6. i don't understand the overly cautious approah to needing on BoE items that are an upgrade for your spec. When grouping with trusted players it isn't a problem, but others wont be trading you for that item if they win on a greed roll.

  7. The system stops people from rolling need when they shouldn't be able to. If you can roll need and it's an up... roll need regardless of BoE/BoP/epic. It's 5 man dungeons, if you really want an item finish the dungeon and requeue for it. If you're being a selfish person and rolling need on greed situations, you'll find yourself getting kicked from groups.
